In honor of Mother's Day and in honor of the fact that I love chic-flicks (I'm not ashamed to say it) I am posting my Top 5 Movie Moms, or movies about Moms, or movies with some sort of motherly figure in them. You get the point. Do you have a favorite Movie Mom?

Number 5 StepMom
I don't know what it is about this movie, every time it is on TV, I must watch it. I love how Julia and Susan can't stand each other in the beginning but work through their issues for the sake of the kids. It also shows that you can be a great mom even if you didn't acutally give birth to a child. When Susan's character wakes up her daughter to go horseback riding in the middle of the night....it's just such a beautiful act of love and appreciation for life. Her daughter will never foget it.

Number 4: Mr. Mom
I'm not sure if this movies counts, but since it's my list, I say it does.
Michael Keaton does a wonderful job realizing that motherhood is not as easy as it may look. I love when he tries to get his youngest son to give up his special blanket or "woobie" as they call it. "I understand that you little guys start out with your woobies and you think they're great... and they are, they are terrific. But pretty soon, a woobie isn't enough. You're out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you're strung out on bedspreads Ken. That's serious."

Number 3: Baby Boom

This is one of my all time favorite movies from the late 80's. I love Diane Keaton as JC Wiatt, (love Diane keaton in anything!) a no-nonsense ad executive in New York who is known as the "tiger lady" amoungst her mostly demeaning male co-workers. When she inherits a baby and moves to a farm in Vermont, her life changes radically..for good or bad...she's not sure. In the end she kicks butt at raising her new daughter and laughing in the faces of the jerks who thought she had lost her mind. I also like this movie because I too wanted to run away to Vermont once in my life. Yes, it's true. When I was 20 years old I thought about packing up my crappy little car and hitting the highway. Vermont whispers my name sometimes but I've still never been there. You rock JC Wiatt!

Number 2: My Big Fat Greek Wedding
I adore the mom in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She is so overbearing but absolutley loves her daughter beyond measure.  "The husband is the head, but the wife is the neck. She can turn the head anyway she wants."   Need I say more?

Number 1: Steel Magnolias

Ok, get your Kleenex out ladies. Each one of these amazing women in this movie represent a different part of a collective mother. What a wonderful ensemble cast and Julia Robert's break out role. But Sally Field has it in the bag as a strong, loving, determined mom..."I find it amusing. Men are supposed to be made out of steel or something. I just sat there. I just held Shelby's hand. There was no noise, no tremble, just peace. Oh God. I realize as a woman how lucky I am. I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out. It was the most precious moment of my life." It makes me cry just reading it.

Didn't know you loved Vermont. Anytime you want a field trip let me know and I'll go with you. Never been there either but sounds like a good time.
